Executive Director, Alcuin Montessori School, Oak Park,
Illinois
HISTORY, PHILOSOPHY and MISSION
Alcuin is one of the oldest Montessori schools in the United States
and was among the first established in the Midwest. Alcuin was founded
in 1961 through the vision, efforts and support of a group of committed
parents. These parents also started the Illinois Montessori Society
and served on the first Board of the American Montessori Society.
Located in Oak Park, Illinois, (www.oprf.com) 9 miles
west of downtown Chicago, the school is located in a very desirable
and attractive neighborhood, close to an appealing downtown area.
Oak Park is diverse in many ways and prides itself on its community
focus. The community at Alcuin is reflective of the Oak Park and
surrounding communities. There is a high level of energy at Alcuin,
people are engaged with one another in meaningful activities and
there is a desire to move forward toward common goals.
The parent body of Alcuin is diverse in that it is
made up of individuals from an assortment of socio-economic and
cultural backgrounds. They value a Montessori education and the
experiences that their children receive at Alcuin. They exhibit
an energetic, enthusiastic spirit and a high level of commitment
to the future of Alcuin Montessori School.
The philosophy and values of Alcuin reflect those
developed and promoted by Maria Montessori. There is an emphasis
on courtesy and respect for each person. The focus of the school
is on building an optimum learning experience for each child.
The school serves approximately 170 students, with
some 30 faculty and staff, the former head of school having served
for the past 10 years. In July 2006, after a one-year interim Head
of School, Alcuin will welcome the next permanent Head of School.
Although not affiliated with any religious organization, Alcuin
is currently sharing space with the First United Methodist Church
of Oak Park. The school's next challenge is to look at opportunities
related to growth and a new facility. The current Board of Trustees
is very committed to working closely as a partner with the new Head
of School to move toward the vision of a new campus.
“Our community is a child-centered learning
environment built on trust in the natural development of mind and
spirit for the next generation”. This mission statement is
the principle and spirit that guides the programs at Alcuin. Studies
are integrated in terms of subject matter and moral learning. Students
develop an appreciation and respect for life, moral empathy, and
a fundamental interest in becoming responsible citizens in the community.
ORGANIZATION AND PROGRAM
Each classroom has a lead teacher and an assistant. There are enrichment
programs in the areas of art, music, drama, physical education and
Spanish.
There are five distinct programs at Alcuin; each designed
specifically to address the developmental, cognitive, emotional
and physical needs of the child. These are: (1) Parent Infant (infants
of 6-18 months); (2) Toddler (ages 18 months-3 years); (3) Primary
(ages 3-6 years); (4) Junior Elementary (ages 6-9 years); and (5)
Senior Elementary (ages 9-12 years). Classrooms are well organized,
spacious and filled with appropriate materials for the particular
level of the children’s education.
In the calm, ordered space of the Montessori prepared
environment, children work on activities of their own choice at
their own pace. They experience a blend of freedom and self-discipline
in a place especially designed to meet their individual developmental
needs.
The dedicated and committed teachers at Alcuin demonstrate
mastery of the Montessori curriculum and theory at the particular
age level they teach. The teachers learn how to use specifically
designed Montessori materials for all subject areas and how to integrate
all subjects to create a three-year program appropriate to the respective
age levels. The Montessori teachers at Alcuin Montessori School
are required to have Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees
(or equivalent) as well as American Montessori Society and/or Association
Montessori Internationale Certification.
A small administrative staff supports this extensive
and enriching program, each of whom fill multiple roles but whose
main focus is on a particular area of activity. The Head of School
serves as the overall leader, supervising the educational program,
the teachers and students, and works in concert with the Board of
Trustees to advance the mission and goals of the school. The Head
of School also helps with all of the other tasks from admissions
and enrollment to finance and purchasing to hiring and staffing.
A business manager, in addition to managing the facility, oversees
the budget, accounts receivable and payable, payroll and all other
financial matters. Other staff members help promote the school through
marketing and public relations, assist with applications and enrollment
and support projects such as newsletters and publications. An administrative
assistant serves as office manager and support for all employees
and families.
A Board of Trustees, elected by the parent community,
is the governing body of Alcuin. In turn, it charges the Head of
School with the operations and management of the school. The Board
exists to create strategic plans, set policies and make decisions
that will best ensure the viability of Alcuin for the current and
future students. This structure gives the community stability and
enables them to be true to the mission of the school.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
The Board of Trustees is working to change the organization
to better meet the future needs of the school. The next biggest
challenge facing Alcuin is to secure a permanent facility and to
launch a capital campaign to support the vision of a new campus.
In addition to the usual responsibilities a Montessori Head of School
would be charged with, the Search Committee is seeking a leader
who can demonstrate the following primary characteristics:
o A true visionary who will partner with the Board of Trustees to
raise capital to support a new campus, with the possible addition
of a Middle School
o Exceptional Leader with these qualities:
o Experience leading organizational change
o Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
o Enthusiasm for community building
o Ability to successfully market the school
o Capable of growing the school while retaining excellent faculty
o Efficient and effective administrative skills
o Eagerness to embrace the school’s Montessori vision and
missionCandidates interested in applying for the position of Head
of School are encouraged to submit a cover letter expressing their
interest and the reasons why they believe they are qualified for
serious consideration; a current resume with positions held, responsibilities
and accomplishments; a statement of their leadership and educational
philosophies; and the names and numbers of five references. Those
materials may be sent electronically to:
