The Montessori School of Maui Named one of 12 “Leading
Edge” Independent Schools in America

Last month the Montessori School of Maui was named
one of 12 “Leading Edge” schools in the country by the National
Association of Independent Schools.
The association’s Leading Edge Program recognizes member schools
that experiment with new ideas and create model programs.
The school was selected for the environmental sustainability award
for small schools (200 or fewer students).
Awards are also given to larger schools in several categories, including
curriculum innovation, equity and justice, and global understanding.
The environmental sustainability award recognizes schools with programs
that best “increase awareness of sustainable living and environmental
issues.”
When it applied for the award, the school highlighted how its Montessori
program integrates the entire curriculum with lessons about environmental
sustainability.
The school takes particular pride in its Earth Education and Living
Classroom program, which includes gardening and a farmers market.
Students of all ages work in the children’s garden, growing organic
produce to sell to the school’s families and staff.
The school plans to add four new classrooms, using “green building”
principles, including recycling green waste as landscaping is cleared,
minimizing construction waste by using the dirt dug out for new
buildings, installing solar water heaters for each classroom and
catching rainwater on the roofs to use for irrigation in the school’s
landscaping.
The Montessori School of Maui was established in 1978. It has an
enrollment of 195 students, from toddlers through middle school.
With its expansion, they expect to grow to an enrollment of 270
students.
