It’s Déjà Vu All Over
Again

by Joyce St. Giermaine, Editor, Tomorrow's Child
As some of you may have noticed, a few months
ago, Tomorrow’s Child and Montessori
Life (published by The American Montessori Society)
featured the same cover shot. I don’t know how it happened
with Montessori Life, but I do know what
happened in our office. . . . I was looking for a cover shot
for the winter issue, which is not always easy because it
has to be vertical and high resolution. Tim Seldin, President
of The Montessori Foundation, was in Japan at the time and
sent me, via email, more than a dozen digital photos that
he had taken at the Montessori School of Tokyo.
I downloaded the entire batch of files to a
folder on my desktop and was thrilled to see that I had so
many wonderful photos from which to choose. For the cover
of Tomorrow’s Child, I selected a lovely
photo named Yoiki’s Garden. The title sounded Japanese.
The photo showed a group of children in a Japanese-style garden.
It was in the folder of digital photos that I had downloaded
from Tim. Not surprisingly, I concluded that this was one
of the photos that Tim had taken in Japan, and, I attributed
it to him.
Later we realized that the email from Princeton
had arrived in the midst of the series of files from Tim.
Tim, who spends more time in schools around
world than at the Foundation, assumed that the picture on
the cover was a stock photograph, which I sometimes use. Imagine
my surprise about a month later when I saw Montessori Life!
Tim promptly called Marsha Stencil at Princeton Montessori
to apologize.
I take complete responsibility for this mistake.
Sometimes I think it was easier in the old days. Actual glossy
photos and the articles in which they were to appear were
sent to us in envelopes, clearly identified. As far as I know,
Princeton Montessori was not too upset to see their school
featured on the cover of two magazines.
To anyone else who was inconvenienced, upset,
has suffered sleepless nights, migraines, or been forced to
take up smoking or other addictive substances to calm their
nerves because of my horrific error, I apologize. It was a
stupid and completely unintentional mistake on my part.

Maybe I should stick to pet photography for
cover shots. I’m not sure how my Sphynx kittens and
Chinese Crested puppies have anything to do with Montessori,
but at least I could be sure of their source!
