Boost to Montessori in South Carolina
ANDERSON — A new teacher certification will allow for more Montessori programs to start up in South Carolina, but its immediate effect on the Upstate is unclear.
According to the South Carolina Department of Education, a new Montessori certification is being developed to allow educators to meet the demand for teachers in the growing number of programs.
The new certification is the first in the country, officials at the education department said.
In South Carolina, 16 districts offer Montessori programs in 42 school serving more than 4,000 students. The number of programs offered is up by 12 from the 2008-09 school year, according to figures from the Department of Education.
