John Long is the retired Head of Post Oak School in Houston, Texas since 1995. His career as an educator began with the United States Peace Corps in Kabul, Afghanistan. In Montessori schools, he worked first as a classroom assistant, and then as a lead teacher in Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary, and Middle School. He has served as head of two large Montessori schools, written for professional journals, spoken at national conferences and workshops, and writes a blog titled Education by Design. He was on the founding faculty of NAMTA's "Orientation to Adolescent Studies." John graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in English Literature, earned an M.Ed. from Cleveland State University in curriculum and instruction, and received his AMI Elementary Certification from the Washington Montessori Institute. He was a founding board member of the Montessori Administrators Association (MAA) and has served the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) on its Board of Directors and the Standards Commission. He and his wife have two kind, thoughtful and energetic adult sons. John is an avid bicycle rider and artist.
