Your child comes home excited about numbers.
Naturally, you want to help. So you pull out some paper and show your child the way you learned to add. Or perhaps you begin teaching letter names, handwriting, multiplication, or borrowing and carrying.
You are doing exactly what caring parents do: taking an interest in your child’s education.
Then the Montessori teacher says something surprising: “Could you hold off on teaching that at home for a little while?”
That can feel strange. Isn’t more learning a good thing?
Usually, the teacher isn’t asking you to stop supporting your child’s learning. The concern is much narrower: two different instructional methods introduced at the same time can sometimes create unnecessary confusion.
Montessori Often Takes a Different Route
Montessori education frequently introduces concepts in a sequence that looks unfamiliar to adults. This is particularly noticeable in mathematics and language.

Concrete mathematics begins with recognizable quantities, including units, tens, hundreds, and thousands.
A child may work extensively with concrete quantities before being asked to perform the same operation abstractly on paper. The child may manipulate beads representing units, tens, hundreds, and thousands before encountering the conventional algorithm in the form adults remember from school.
In language, children may explore the sounds within words, trace Sandpaper Letters, build words with the Movable Alphabet, and work with spoken and written language in a carefully considered progression. Handwriting, spelling, reading, and composition develop along interconnected paths that may not look like the sequence a parent experienced in school.

Different Doesn’t Necessarily Mean Better or Worse
This is important. The issue isn’t that everything a parent learned in school was wrong, nor does it mean there is only one legitimate way to understand mathematics, reading, or writing.
The problem arises when a child who is just beginning to construct an understanding is simultaneously being given two different sets of procedures, terminology, or cues. An adult can usually reconcile two approaches. A young child may not yet understand that they are simply different routes to the same destination.

Imagine Learning to Drive
Suppose one instructor tells you to follow a particular sequence every time you parallel park. Just as the sequence is beginning to make sense, another instructor says, “No, here’s an easier way.”
The second method may be perfectly legitimate. But while you are still learning, switching back and forth can make the task harder rather than easier. Once you truly understand what you’re doing, learning alternative approaches becomes much less confusing.
Children often benefit from the same consistency.

Ask Before You Jump Ahead
If your child becomes excited about multiplication, reading, cursive writing, fractions, or another subject, that’s wonderful. You don’t need to shut down the conversation.
Instead, ask the teacher: “My child is really interested in this. What are you doing at school right now, and how can we support that interest at home?”

That question turns the parent and teacher into partners. The teacher may suggest games, books, cooking, measuring, storytelling, trips to the library, nature exploration, or activities that reinforce the underlying concept without inadvertently introducing a conflicting procedure.
Home Is Full of Mathematics and Language
Supporting learning at home doesn’t have to mean giving lessons. You might cook together and double a recipe, estimate the grocery bill, measure a room, count change, notice patterns, read road signs, write a shopping list, tell stories, play word games, read aloud, even after your child can read independently, talk about interesting words, wonder about where words come from, and let children see you reading and writing because they are useful and enjoyable.

These experiences make mathematics and language part of real life rather than turning home into an extension of school.

Everyday experiences, such as noticing signs while walking, invite children to observe language and numbers naturally.

Writing a shopping list gives a child a meaningful reason to use language independently.
And Sometimes, Go Ahead and Teach
There is no Montessori rule saying that parents must never teach their children anything. That would be absurd. Parents are children’s first and most enduring teachers.
The point is coordination. If your child asks a question, answer it. If you don’t know how the school is approaching something, it’s perfectly reasonable to say, “That’s interesting. Let’s ask your teacher how you’re working with that at school.”
As children grow older and their understanding becomes more flexible, seeing several approaches can actually deepen understanding. The concern is greatest when a child is first constructing a concept and needs consistency.
So if a Montessori teacher asks you to wait before showing your child another way to do something, don’t hear “parents shouldn’t teach.” Hear instead: let’s work together so the messages we give your child support rather than compete with one another.
